Security breach at Nedbank service providers

Nedbank says there was a security breach at one of its third-party service providers but no client banking information has been compromised.

The data security issue was found at Computer Facilities (Pty) Ltd during routine monitoring procedures. The company sends out SMS’s and emails on Nedbank’s behalf. The bank says data handled by Computer Facilities include personal information such as ID numbers, telephone numbers and physical addresses of some of its clients.

The bank says that “a subset of the potentially compromised data at Computer Facilities included personal information (names, ID numbers, telephone numbers, physical and/or email addresses) of some Nedbank clients”. About 1.7 million clients were affected by this security issue, with 1.1 million of those clients being active.

Nedbank stresses bank accounts are not at risk.

“No Nedbank systems or client bank accounts have been compromised in any manner whatsoever or are at risk as a result of this data issue at Computer Facilities,” the bank said.

Nedbank Group Chief Information Officer Fred Swanepoel said Computer Facilities did not have any links to Nedbank’s systems. As a further precautionary measure, Computer Facilities’ systems have been disconnected from the internet until further notice.

Clients’ bank accounts are not at risk and they do not need to take any further action other than continuing to be vigilant against attempts at fraud, Nedbank said.
